Wireless Internet Access
Wireless, or Wi-Fi, technology allows Library users to bring their own computers or PDAs to the Library and to access the Internet.
Users will need a WiFi compliant 802.11b/g wireless device installed in their laptop, or a laptop/PDA with integrated Wi-Fi compatibility. Additionally, laptops need to have a web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Netscape Navigator
- How do I use wireless at the Library?
The Springdale Public Library uses Wi-Fi standards (also known as IEEE 802.11b and 802.11g). These standards provide up to 54 megabits/second connection speed. Speed will vary by location and number of users.
You will need to bring your own laptop computer to the Library and it will need to have built-in wireless, or you will need to install a wireless network card. The Library does not provide wireless cards. Most wireless equipment will be compatible. However, the Library can make no guarantees as to compatibility of your equipment with the Library’s network.
- Will I need any special settings or passwords to connect?
In most cases, all you need is your library card number and PIN (personal identification number) to connect to the Library’s wireless Internet access. The PIN is the same PIN you would use to access the Library’s hard-wired network. If you have never used the Library's Internet computers, you will need to visit the Reference Desk before you sign on.
Adult visitors may obtain a visitor pass at the Reference Desk to be able to access the Library’s wireless Internet network.
- Is there any reason why I wouldn't be able to use the Library's wireless access?
Wireless access points provide a shared bandwidth. As the number of users increase, the available bandwidth per user diminishes dramatically. Users needing higher bandwidth must use a wired library public access computer.
- Is the Library's wireless access filtered?
Yes. Adults who wish to have unfiltered Internet access will need to use one of the Library's wire Internet computers.
- Can I print from my laptop using wireless?
No. Printers are not available to wireless users in the Library at this time. If you need to print materials from your laptop using a wireless connection, save them to a disk or email files to yourself, then login to a library workstation and send print jobs to a printer.
- Since I'm using my own equipment, do the rules about computer use still apply to me?
Yes. All patrons using Library services and facilities are subject to the Springdale Public Library Computer Use Policy and Guidelines, copies of which are available at the Reference Desk or at www.springdalelibrary.org
Any activities deemed illegal apply to you whether or not you are on a library-owned computer or your own laptop using the Library’s wireless network. Illegal activities include violation of copyright agreements, harassment of others through the Internet, exploitation of security holes in computers or networks, and the viewing of sexually graphic and/or explicit materials.
- Can the Library help me configure my computer?
No. Everyone’s computer is different and you are responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment. The Library cannot be responsible for any changes you make to your computer’s settings. If you need additional assistance, you may need to contact the manufacturers of your hardware or software. Library staff cannot provide any help beyond this FAQ.
- What about virus protection and security?
It is solely the responsibility of the laptop owner/user to provide anti-virus protection, and to configure laptop/PDA settings to provide appropriate security settings to control access from other wireless devices within the Library and the Internet itself.
The Springdale Public Library cannot and will not take responsibility for damages incurred for incorrect, insufficient or incomplete security settings; or lack of adequate or up-to-date virus protection. Wireless users assume all risks in this regard.
- What hours is wireless access available?
Wireless access is available all hours that the Library is open.
