Astronomy Program

The Springdale High School Astronomy program and the Astronomy for Educators program at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, are partnering to present multiple opportunities for the public to enjoy participating in space science and astronomy.

Springdale High School Astronomy students will be your “guides on the side” as you use a variety of high-quality astronomical instruments. In the daytime, guests will be able to safely observe the Sun through large telescopes using solar filters. At evening events, SHS students will help you use a variety of telescopes and other equipment to enjoy the night sky.

The Astronomy for Educators program at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, has a new 90mm solar telescope.  This dedicated instrument allows student observers to see the surface of the Sun in great detail, revealing solar flares, prominences, and other solar features.  This Coronado SolarMax telescope is also equipped to allow solar photography, even videography.

For evening events, the Astronomy for Educators program brings large refractor and reflector telescopes, allowing students and families to make observations of the Moon, planets, and distant galaxies in unprecedented detail.  Students can observe landslides inside lunar craters, observe the frozen poles of Mars and watch sandstorms cross the planet, we can even observe solar eclipses on Jupiter and see into deep space where new stars are being born.  STEM and astronomy outreach for students and families and professional development for faculty at all levels are part of the core mission of the Astronomy for Educators program at the University of Arkansas.
